This is a hard one OP. Last summer my father died suddenly when my DD was at camp. I had no idea what to do -- she LOVES the camp (overnight, another state) and I didn't want her to associate it with bad things plus I was my own mental case about it all. My family graciously put off the funeral for a few days (he died on Tuesday and she was returning the following Sunday) to accommodate our decision on what to do. I called the camp director and talked it out with her. In the end she advised me to tell my DD then and see if she wanted to come home. They would bring her to the office with her counselor and the director so she felt safe and there were immediate hugs available (crying just typing this out). I told her and she was very upset. She said she wanted to come home immediately and I told her of course I would come get her. After staying on a bit longer I got off. Within a few hours the director called back to say she wanted to stay. They were planning special things to do such as sending up floating lanterns for him and she would let her call me whenever she needed. I did get a few calls but in the end she stayed. Sorry for the long note. I would call the director and see what they think. I know a dog isn't a grandfather but dogs are really important to kids.
