If ANY of the "kids" on Vampire Diaries is under 22, I'll eat my hat. I think 25 would be a safe bet, too. If the characters were adults, we'd all be wondering how they manage to have those nice houses when they never seem to go to work, or how come their bosses keep overlooking the fact that they take four out of every five days off to deal with vampire drama, or whatever. Setting these shows in high schools isn't about youth-- they don't even bother to cast HS-age actors. It's just a way to avoid the tedium and responsibility that grownups live with; we all remember how dramatic high school was-- so even if there's no vampire drama this week, they can stress about final exams or something. Also, while adults will happily watch 25-year-olds pretending to be in HS, teens (a very lucrative market) may be less likely to watch adults going to work at an insurance company or something.
