Parents need to stand up and basically tell this assholes that have taken over youth soccer to cut the crap. Parents had a lot more say in this area back in the 80s where everyone wasn't so afraid that if they spoke up their kids would be blackballed. No way in hell would our team have driven 4 hours back and forth for a single regular season game in VA Beach. Parents and our coach would have raised hell. People are washcloths nowadays. I played on a National Championship winning travel team---we had Jill Ellis and Mia Hamm on my and my siblings teams. Other siblings played on top boys teams. Really, VA Beach for a single, non-competitive sucky regular season game??? Kids are really getting a lot out of sitting in I-95 traffic for 8 hours. Don't give me this shit about lifestyle choices either. The kid would be better off working with a top private trainer that day or playing in one of the many pick up street soccer games in the area than sitting in car 90% of the day. Leagues need to sort their shit out.
First, name the league that forces you to drive to VA Beach. Second, do not play for a team that plays in that league. Problem solved. If you want to stay within the DMV then WAGS, ODSL and NCSL are the leagues for you. If those leagues still require to much "travel" for "travel soccer" for your tastes just play rec. Your outrage is rather silly when there are lots of options available for you.
1. CCL 2. In order to be on the "top" team in some clubs, you are in CCL. If you aren't on the top team, you don't get the same opportunities. You probably won't get the top level coach, you definitely won't be seen by scouts, you may not hear of other trainings outside of your club, etc. The point is there are top level players that would be much better served by more local competition than they would be sitting in a car for 8 hours on a Saturday to either win or lose by a large margin. And it's happening regularly. I have 4 travel soccer players from u-17 to u-9. I don't mind the "travel" part of it at all. If it's for good soccer, good experiences, good training, etc. Unfortunately, it's often not the case.
