Before having kids and well-stocked fridge, I also made a trip to a grocery store...and spent the early part of hurricane Sandy trying to find a coffee carafe within walking distance from Courthouse since I had just broken mine (ended up jerry-rigging my coffee maker to work with a pot).  Nowadays we generally have plenty of food (though we do seem to be out of coffee again), and DH and DD are strangely obsessed with flashlights so you can't get really far in our house without tripping over one.[/quote]
