My MIL is a super efficient person, so I am sure her prep involved all aspects of food, water, heat, means of communications, means of transportation, security and all kinds of medical emergencies. If she was here, she would have taken over the prep. However, since she does not live with us, and since she could not possibly imagine that people like me are clueless about prep, she has not offered any tips, advice or any final admonishment.

I have spent my entire day in bed. We have tons of food at home. There are no chores to be done - house is clean, laundry is done, food is cooked, no school, office, EC activity. This is the kind of vacation, that I love.

My mother in law is Egyptian and has never seen snow. She is having a complete shit fit over the media coverage of this storm (yes, they are talking about it in Egypt). I'm spending my time telling her I'm keeping her grandkids safe.

Is this for real? I honestly don't know what my MIL did, but DH grew up in an area that was a little more remote and frequently lost power after storms for several days. I think they focused on making sure they had enough firewood and kerosene for lamps. FIL is an ER doc, and he'd park his car at the top of their street near the main road which would likely be plowed long before their street.

MIL isn't much of a cook, but I'm guessing they also made sure to have enough food.

Before having kids and well-stocked fridge, I also made a trip to a grocery store...and spent the early part of hurricane Sandy trying to find a coffee carafe within walking distance from Courthouse since I had just broken mine (ended up jerry-rigging my coffee maker to work with a pot). Nowadays we generally have plenty of food (though we do seem to be out of coffee again), and DH and DD are strangely obsessed with flashlights so you can't get really far in our house without tripping over one.

She sure does - she spends the entire winter in Florida with my FIL. Kind of wishing we prepped the same way they do right now!

If she's 85, sure. If she's 63? She can nut up and be a grown-up. It's a snowstorm, not the End of Days. Seriously.

She's 62 and in great health. She'd be fine. She just didn't want to be bored. It's fine--she's here. At least it's one more person to help keep the kids occupied. We actually get along fine but 3-5 days of 24/7 in the house with anyone is a lot.

My MIl passed away a long time ago, but I am guessing her idea of storm prep would have been drinking all the alcohol in the house and going to bed, so yes she would handle storm prep differently than I do.

I picked my own mother up this morning and she is staying with us for the duration, luckily her idea of storm prep is lots and lots of baking, which she is doing now at my house.

I don't get it.

Each human being does things a little differently than another. Why make it about a MIL/DIL?

My mil lives in the middle of nowhere in a very cold state, so I'm sure she could teach me a thing or two. They have a storm cellar and have used it during tornado threats.

She would approve of my current practice of having a drink to welcome the storm...

My own mother was as coddled as I am and was useless during power outages.
