My DS was always 99 for height and weight and had a big old head. (Such fun pushing that thing out!) He's just a big boy and given his size, has always been mistaken for older than he is. He's 22 months now and 37 inches tall, 31 lbs. I'll say he slimmed out the more active he became, which wasn't too long ago honestly, he was a bit behind with crawling/walking, just preferred to sit and watch the world go by. Now he basically just goes wild whenever he's outdoors and in the house he can't seem to walk anywhere, always has to run. My husband and I are both tall. He's 6'1" and I'm 5'10" and every male on my side of the family tops 6'5", so I think he's just going to be a big guy. Now when he was younger he was a big, pudgy buddy and had a big moon face and he wanted to eat all the time. Now that he's eating regular food, he can put quite a bit away if it's something he really likes. Other things, eh, not so much. Some days I think he just exists on air and cracker crumbs. But anyway, no, I wasn't worried about him then and I'm not now. He's just a big guy. Too big for me to carry! Please just tell your MIL that your doctor isn't concerned and he's just a big, healthy baby who will grow into a fine strapping young man. :)
