It's sexist and arbitrary. No leggings, but what about skinny sweatpants/joggers? How wide do tank top straps have to be before they aren't tank tops anymore? How many inches below the waist do pants have to hang before they''re considered low-riding? Do teachers and administrators have rulers? Can kids turn each other in for dress-code infractions? Who makes the final call of what's appropriate?

What happens to a kid who's determined to be wearing an offending item? Does she have to go home and change, missing class time? CHange into her gym uniform so that she's shamed the rest of the day? Can this get someone suspended?

It's a bit like the (now discredited) broken windows approach to policing--it makes sense in theory, but then you see how much collateral damage there is, impossible it is to enforce rules/laws consistently, and how much time the enforcers spend on paperwork and low-level bullshit when they have much bigger fish to fry.[/quote]
