Subject: Deal Middle School -- no leggings
Your kid can wear anything they/you want during non-school hours. I don't see what the big deal is. The problem may not be your child but how other kids wear it and they have to make a standard rule for all kids or parents like you will complain. Instead of complaining, tell your child, those are the rules. We do not have to agree with them or like them but we do have to respect the rules at school and you can wear them after school and on weekends.

Just because something is marketed to children doesn't mean you have to buy it for them! I don't buy Chef Boyardee, Kool Aide, and Cap'n Crunch for my kids.

Some parents take it too far and do not consider the material nor the way their child looks in the leggings. Not every person wearing them is stick thin and shapeless.

The problem is more there are many leggings and hedging a that are thin. It's a lot harder to police thickness of leggings that to ban them all together. There are plenty of more appropriate for girls. Personally, I do think they are inappropriate and always watch boys turn and look at a girl's ass when they walk by. I don't know why parents of middle school girls think it's ok.

When my child attended Deal, the girls couldn't wear spaghetti straps.
The width of the trap had to be three fingers wide.
I didn't object, but if my daughter did wear one it was covered with a shirt.
Skirts had to be arms length as well.

OP, I'd definitely say something to the principal about it. I have boys bound for Deal, and I'd still be inclined to say something.
It's sexist and arbitrary. No leggings, but what about skinny sweatpants/joggers? How wide do tank top straps have to be before they aren't tank tops anymore? How many inches below the waist do pants have to hang before they''re considered low-riding? Do teachers and administrators have rulers? Can kids turn each other in for dress-code infractions? Who makes the final call of what's appropriate?
What happens to a kid who's determined to be wearing an offending item? Does she have to go home and change, missing class time? CHange into her gym uniform so that she's shamed the rest of the day? Can this get someone suspended?
It's a bit like the (now discredited) broken windows approach to policing--it makes sense in theory, but then you see how much collateral damage there is, impossible it is to enforce rules/laws consistently, and how much time the enforcers spend on paperwork and low-level bullshit when they have much bigger fish to fry.
