Dumb question, but didn't the Afghan commanders serve as dancing boys at one point? Not defending this twisted circle of life, but it should be noted that those they're partnering with grew up in a some similarly horrific conditions. It's not like the commander went ROTC at Afghan U.
No. Dancing boys don't grow up to be Commanders in the Afghan army. Not all boys are sold to older, more powerful men to be raped and used. Even if you came from horrific conditions, why would you perpetrate horror on other innocents!? Dancing boys are sold by poor families. dancing boys are taken by force from families or women who have no husbands-war widows, women themselves who have been raped and are living on the fringes of Afghan society and helpless. Our interpreter told our platoon he was spending his leave buying an 11 year old girl to have sex with/ rape for his 2 week leave. Everyone wanted to beat his ass, minimum.
