I don't think anyone can know conclusively.[/quote] There are many things you can't know conclusively -- anything for which there is no evidence -- this goes not only for hell, but for Zeus and all the other gods, for the demons of superstition and all the characters in fairy tales and fables. Many of these things serve or once served a good purpose but could never be known conclusively. I think the main reason a lot of people believe in hell (or heaven) is that they've been taught it by people they trust. and of course faith. With enough faith, you can believe just about anything.
