I don't know. But, the belief in the afterlife goes back to ancient times. When different cultures from all over the world who haven't had contact with each other believe in some form of after life, you have to wonder how it is people have come to believe in it.

As someone said, the greatest trick Satan did was to get people to believe he doesn't exist.

There are many things you can't know conclusively -- anything for which there is no evidence -- this goes not only for hell, but for Zeus and all the other gods, for the demons of superstition and all the characters in fairy tales and fables. Many of these things serve or once served a good purpose but could never be known conclusively.

I think the main reason a lot of people believe in hell (or heaven) is that they've been taught it by people they trust. and of course faith. With enough faith, you can believe just about anything.

According to Christianity, you can commit any sin you want and still go to heaven and long as you believe and trust in Jesus Christ and ask forgiven for your sins. People sin repeatedly and ask forgiveness and God grants it as long as you're sincere and continue to believe.

The "get out of jail free if you believe in Jesus" card with regards to Christianity (or at least the way many Christians practice their Christianity) has always seemed completely gross to me.

So you prefer to believe in one strike and you're out.

No, I believe to act with honest, good intention, all the time, from the get-go. I don't believe in god/religion anymore, but when I did, I believed that truly having your heart in the right place was what counted and what mattered to god. And yes, if your hear *wasn't* in the right place, you are held permanently accountable.

I still believe that in a way, just without the religion/god. We're held accountable to our conscience, and to each other as humans.

It most certainly does. God knows his people are sinners and he forgives them as long as they are sorry and continue to believe in Jesus as their savior. If they are sorry, or stop committing so many sins but no longer believe in Jesus, then he does not forgive them. Those people don't care, because they no longer believe in salvation, but God is still keeping track of them and will punish them after they die for their lack of belief, no matter how good they were compared to faithful Christians.

I don't believe in hell. But I do believe the worst crime is denying birth control to women, resulting in unwanted pregnancies that then result in more abortion. Or denying women the power to control their lives, further their education, and get out from under abusive men. Well done, christianity.
