The tree doesn't have any religious significance, it's a secular symbol of the holiday.
So it's a secular symbol of the Christmas holiday? But Christmas is a religious holiday. Why is there a secular symbol?
Christmas has a religious side and a secular side. Many strict Christian sects have had issues with the secular side of Christmas over the years. Puritans banned it. Jevohah's Witnesses don't celebrate it. My fundie receptionist (not sure what she is --Foursquare Bible, maybe) doesn't celebrate it. My family is atheist. We put up a tree and celebrate secular Christmas. It's an excuse for parties and gifts and pretty lights and good food in December, when the days are shortest. It has about as much religious significance for us as the 4th of July.
