in order to determine the correct PC term of the moment, you have to consider your location. In Canada, they are referred to as First Nations. Sometimes they are also referred to as aboriginal peoples. For a hot second, the correct term was Indiginous Peoples. Any use of the word Indian to describe these people is considered pejorative. Not exactly sure what the term is at the moment in the US. I do know that you are not supposed to ask: Casino Indian or Slurpee Indian? That is definitely not ok.
Why yes, different cultures and societies do often use different words, and different groups of people in different places do often have different names for themselves. Both of those things are well known. My suggestion: make your best sincere informed guess, and if somebody who knows what they're talking about corrects you, then accept the correction graciously rather than defensively (or passive-aggressively).
