Or make a contribution to a joint retirement fund, or early mortgage payment, or down payment savings account, or honey moon fund, etc. But then, I'm not a ring wearer and our engagement ring cost only $150 -- it is my birthstone (no diamonds). If you like to wear rings, and look forward to wearing your engagement ring every day, spend enough to get something you like but no more than you have in your checking/savings account and would spend on a vacation.
