I could have written this post, OP! I DETEST my granite countertops. It's the black granite with the starburst pattern / flecks. I miss my old kitchen with white marble so much, but I can't stomach the expense and the waste. I was just wondering today if there would be a way to buff it or cover it up with an extra layer of something in another color. Sigh.
Can you work around it with paint? I'm one if the PPs who kept the granite I didn't care for. It was a very busy bold brown-based granite. I had really been hoping for a gunmetal grey and white kitchen, but there was just no shade of grey that didn't make e countertops look dreadful. Instead,I kept the white cabinetry, put up a white subway tile backsplash, and painted all the walls a dark chocolate brown. By making everything either white or chocolate brown, suddenly the countertops blended in and looked like they belong. It's still my gunmetal-grey-black-and-white kitchen, just with browns.
