Can you work around it with paint? I'm one if the PPs who kept the granite I didn't care for. It was a very busy bold brown-based granite. I had really been hoping for a gunmetal grey and white kitchen, but there was just no shade of grey that didn't make e countertops look dreadful. Instead,I kept the white cabinetry, put up a white subway tile backsplash, and painted all the walls a dark chocolate brown. By making everything either white or chocolate brown, suddenly the countertops blended in and looked like they belong. It's still my gunmetal-grey-black-and-white kitchen, just with browns.

Op, we moved in to a house a few years ago with granite from a 2004 renovation. I detest it as well and would replace it, except the previous owners picked cheap cabinets, so I ma just waiting to replCe both the cabinets and countertops. Granite is what eveyone puts on their old cabinet to spruce up their kitchens and it looks terrible.

Get what you want - unless, as another poster mentioned, you are cutting-into the college budget, retirement, or some other expense that affects others.

I would do the same thing, OP.

Lots of indignant granite lovers on here who are inexplicably offended by your dislike of granite! And I bet these same posters could have written your exact post if you changed the words "granite" to "Formica" and "marble" to "granite."

If you have kids, that is half year of college. Make sure all other expenses paid for first.

So wasteful to get rid of good granite-you sound like a snobby elitist with money to burn!

Replacing it with marble probably won't improve your property value at all. Both granite and marble are good materials but subject to individual tastes. Most newer homes are moving to manufactured stone (like Silestone, CaesarStone, etc.).

But, it would add a ton of enjoyment for YOU if you change them to something you like. If you have the extra money, do it. If money is a big concern, you be better served to make other improvements on the house.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that not only could the granite crack, but the cabinets or whatever it is mounted on can be destroyed too. That would cost much more than 20K.

Another thought on the granite. If it is glossy, could it be sanded to honed finish that might mitigate the problem? I really, really, really don't like granite, but especially the high gloss granite counter tops. Anyway, if I had granite in a color I didn't mind that could be changed from a glossy to a honed finish, I might go in that direction.

Marble is terrible. I would just freshen up the cabinets, only the rich and irresponsible throw out perfectly good granite.
