My 30 something (at the time) husband once left a pot of soup simmering on the stove, forgot about it and went out to run some errands.  I came home with the kids after being out and about, discovered it  and I was shocked and worried - because that is not something that my husband would ever do.  Turns out he was in the middle a home project and got distracted when he needed a tool or a part that he didn't have on hand.  He ran out the door to get what he needed from the store and while he was out got his hair cut, gas for the car...leaving the pot simmering on the stove.

That was the first and last time he did anything like that. If it could happen to my careful husband, it could happen to anyone.  I'm glad that you caught these things before they became a problem, Op.[/quote]
