Why are some parents so scared to actually parent. Instead of helicoptering, talk to your kids about drugs and alcohol.
Why do so many parents think they can control this? Of course talk to your children about these things. But since the vast majority of kids experiment anyway, its best not to judge the parents. PP, your kids are drinking. They just aren't telling you. (Unless they are young, in which case you really don't know what you are talking about).
But that's exactly my point. You can't control it. So why bother trying to delve into which schools have a reputation for alcohol or drug use. Alcohol and drugs are obviously going to be present in each and every public and private school. My incoherent point, I guess, was that there is no way to control the environment, so truly talk to your kids from an early age with the understanding that they WILL drink and they will likely try drugs.
OK, then, we agree. Talk to your kids about safety. The most important thing is that they (1) not drive after drinking, (2) not get in a car with someone who was drinking, (3) not take a drink from someone else or pick up a drink that you've lost sight of -- girls especially, (4) Watch out for their friends. The best way to ensure that is to tell them they have complete amnesty if they call in any of these circumstances. The worst thing would be to draw lines in the sand and react to the idea of any drinking so that you drive them under ground.
