If you're afraid to wear a regular sized diamond ring on the metro, you have fear issues that are irrational.
I am careful when I sit near a door with my phone and probably wouldn't use my iPad, but come on people. Someone MIGHT see your ring and think "I bet they have cash in their wallet" but no one is likely to bother you if you look alert and confident.
Seriously.
It's amazing to me how paranoid and egocentric some people are.
1) Your stuff is not that special or great.
2) The whole world isn't conspiring about how to take it from you. Really, I promise.
^^^^ - said the person who hasn't been mugged (yet) and drives instead of taking metro in DC.
Nope. I've ridden Metro pretty much every work day for the past 15 years. Also used to do regular home visits in neighborhoods that would have most DCUM'ers clutching their pearls. But you're right about one thing - I've never had a bad experience.

OP here. Those were her exact words: "It's too gaudy and showy for the Metro."
Is your corwoker new to DC and from a super small town? It never occured me to not wear jewelry on metro and I ride it all over and live in a transitioning neighborhood.

OP again. She's from an NYC suburb and has lived in DC for a long time.
To be fair, I didn't get the sense she thought someone would rob her of the ring itself, but rather that it would draw unwanted attention overall.

Her engagement ring, in my opinion, is beautiful but modestly sized at probably around .5ct. We do work in a gentrified area where crime is on the rise.
So, do you wear your engagement ring or other jewelry on the metro?
Can't she drive?
