This is not a MV question necessarily, but I have wondered about a weird scenario: what about a family who gets matched for pre-K three with one child who also has a not-at-MV K child? Wouldn't that family get sib preference, and presumably at least consider enrolling both children? Assuming I am right, maybe some sib-pref kids on MV's WL chart fit this pattern.
Yes, that is exactly what happens. An accepted child's sibling jumps to the top of the waitlist. As you can see from the list, however, there are already a lot of children that have done that. Generally, MV goes to great lengths to make sure that all the siblings of accepted children will get in. With such a huge expansion year, and so many students that will fall into that category, I'm not absolutely sure that will be possible. But, you can count on them trying as hard as they can, as the administration sees a high priority in having entire families together. This is a major issue for children that are on the list and don't have siblings, as you may actually move further from the top of the list rather than closer. Generally it is the older kid that pulls the younger one in, by the way, although that doesn't have to be the case.
the beauty of the MV waitlist is that they have already taken into account the sibling who applied at the same time as the lucky accepted kid (but did not get in) and put them closer to the top of the waitlist. so in effect the waitlist is already the *true* list of people in that order without the possibility of the sibling knocking you down further slots while the already accepted kiddo enrolls. That sibling is already ahead because the accepted kid automatically places them ahead even before actual enrollment. This is a kindness to all of us on the waitlist and is a sign of an efficient administration. so the weird scenario this year of accepting a slot and then saying "oh yeah" I have this other kid who I want in as well" should not be able to happen. the sibling would have had to apply in the common lottery and is already under the preference, already gotten the benefit of that preference and already has risen to the top, thus eliminating the unpleasant surprise of being number 1 on a waitlist but slinking down to 9 or something like that as siblings start to come out of the woodwork. I believe this year as people must accept in the lottery only one slot by May 1st we will have a clearer idea of who will be coming in the fall. that's not to say there will not be hold outs who accept the matched spot them decide come fall they don't want it...but there may not be so many who hold onto several spots and inflate the waitlists everywhere.
