OP, your premise is wrong: We're "high SES" and our kids went to Maury, then Stuart-Hobson, not the only ones either. Several "high SES" parents have kids at Eliot-Hine, coming in from Maury. I think what you can say is, that Maury is possibly a little more political, politically agile, and willing to roll up their sleeves and get the work done. In fact, Maury has long attracted a high number of "high SES" families from around town. I've got a few blisters on my hands but our kids are thriving, possibly for all those reasons. Or did you mean black?
I think this experiment is still on with Eliot Hine. But you are totally correct that both Maury and Brent have long attracted middle class and academically ambitious families from all over the city.
Anyone who thinks that Brent has been a longtime citywide mecca for high performing students is mistaken, if not delusional. What some have characterized as the "big flip" started in the 2005-2006 time period when IB students first began to attend in meaningful numbers for the new early childhood programs. At that time, Brent certainly had no deserved reputation as a top performing elementary school. Many OOB families, the majority of whom were AA, nevertheless had attended Brent and done well academically. I don't understand PP's bloviating comment about Maury parents (as opposed to Brent parents?) being "more . . . willing to roll up their sleeves and get the work done.". What exactly does this mean?
