But it's not like a varsity team in that they only people who can go out for the team are those with enough money to buy their own equipment and have parents who can make arrangements to shuttle them to practices and games. This seems more like a travel soccer team than a school team. They may be great players, but they are not representative of the school in that not everyone at the school can afford to try out for the team.
What??? This is one of the points of the petition. Do you honestly think hockey is more expensive the football? Football is subsidized with nice stadiums, full uniforms, coaches, referees, practice equipment, etc. It's only free because the school system and booster clubs pay for it. Why can't any sport have that model? As for having talent and skills to make your HS team, I am willing to bet that most HS sports have kids whose parents had to pay money to play basketball, soccer, lacrosse, etc. all throughout youth. I bet most of these other HS teams have travel players on them. Also, The RM coach on the video even said they would take new kids and work with them. As for your comment that these kids don't represent their school - that is just silly. They all come from the same school and put the school name on the uniform. Taken further, are you saying that any diversity in a school means they don't represent that school because they are not like the majority? If a team was made up of a poor minority group in an a mostly white school, should they not be allowed to play under the school name? Like I say, I went to a public HS hockey game the other night where the stands were full and the teams and fans were definitely representing. I don't think this point is well thought out. Previous posters are right. I think a little recognition would go a long way. It's a start. There probably other sports/clubs where this is true too.
