Also consider: unless you want to pay a lawyer to represent you, you'll be spending time navigating the paperwork required by small claims court and you'll be taking time off to attend court dates. Totally not worth it, even if you win. And you may not win -- it will be your word against his, and everyone will ask why you didn't call the police about the property damage/theft when it happened, if it was really so bad.
