OP, I am one of the ones who said i skipped and it gets hard later socially (and also said that taking a year before college was great). I am NOT saying it will be hard for your DC, because it's so individual. My intellectual ability would have outpaced my social skills regardless of age. That's just me. And it depends on the kid's birthday too. I mean, skipped a grade but birthday is October, well, that's not such a big deal. But for me, it meant I was driving almost a year later than everyone else (in a very car-reliant area), and also I was a 15 year old girl in a class with 17 year old boys. Thank God I was a total nerd, because i was intimidated by them rather than attracted, but it's a strange scene. And also, being 12 in high school (again, with much older kids there too), you just aren't as "worldly". For girls, height isn't such a big thing, but my brother also skipped and it was very tough for him until he hit his growth spurt. Got picked-on by bullies for a good year.
OP again. I agree with you. I have older son who is equally talented and we never want him to skip the grade for the same problem you mentioned. For my DD, she is born in Oct and the age difference is not much with other kids in Ist grade.
