And it depends on the kid's birthday too. I mean, skipped a grade but birthday is October, well, that's not such a big deal. But for me, it meant I was driving almost a year later than everyone else (in a very car-reliant area), and also I was a 15 year old girl in a class with 17 year old boys. Thank God I was a total nerd, because i was intimidated by them rather than attracted, but it's a strange scene. And also, being 12 in high school (again, with much older kids there too), you just aren't as "worldly".
For girls, height isn't such a big thing, but my brother also skipped and it was very tough for him until he hit his growth spurt. Got picked-on by bullies for a good year.

OP again. I agree with you. I have older son who is equally talented and we never want him to skip the grade for the same problem you mentioned. For my DD, she is born in Oct and the age difference is not much with other kids in Ist grade.

There are folks who hold their kids back for various reasons and those who push them ahead. I think it is extremely individual and is not a fad.

OP again. Thanks everybody for the positive comments as well as thanks to those who tried to warn me about the downside.
Just want to clear something. We did not take this decision in rush and it was not up to us to skip the grade. There is very rigorous procedure in MOCO. There were Education Management team, County Counselor and expert in this area, Class teacher and principal who unanimously took this decision. They assessed my DD for 6 weeks in all aspects. We expressed our all concerns to them but they assured us nothing to worry.
Now we are happy for her.

PP again. I'll also add that being labelled one of the 'smart' kids actually helped me in middle school. I kind if hung out with the other 'smart' kids and it kept me out of trouble and with a good core group if friends. It was part of my identity, for better or worse. I think middle school would have been even tougher for me if I didn't have that 'identity'.

Eh, middle school is tough for everyone. Girls, boys, the younger students in a class, the older students in a class. It's a tough time no matter what.

I skipped a grade and did fine in middle school (with some run of the mill middle school angst!). My sister was the oldest in her class and didn't struggle any less with fitting in.

OP, your kid will be fine!! Good luck to her.

Personally, I think age is a pretty arbitrary way to group students anyway. They should be grouped by ability or knowledge.

Good grief.

OP, also don't be surprised if you don't regret advancing her when she gets to middle school.

I would be in touch with the teacher with your concerns. Perhaps she can give you a better assessment of your child's situation relative to the rest of the class. She may be able to provide extra enrichment..or your child may be bored because the beginning of K has alot of testing etc and once she is in a reading/math group she will find more challenge.
