We just got back from a trip to California with our 2yo. In LA, we stayed on the first floor of a house that had a private backyard, LR, 2 full bathrooms, a kitchen and bedroom with separate office area where we put his crib. All that for $135 a night in a nice neighborhood. As our flabbergasted friends in LA said, "That's more than Motel 6 in a crummy part of town."

Besides the additional space, we had a kitchen, which saved money on breakfast, snacks and the occasional dinner in; our son could nap without a maid coming into the room in the middle of the afternoon; and the owner had an extensive guide including nearby restaurants, shops and hospitals, as well as her own doctor's and dentist's contact info in case of emergency.

Once you start renting condos and houses, you won't go back.
