It's not always a lot of work, sometimes we just order pizza and drink beer, watch a sports game. Also, at work I took the initiative to invite people to after-work happy hours, lunch time exercise, and the like. Some of my work relationships have really progressed to the point that they are the closest I have to good friends in the area and we occasionally get together on the weekends for girls' movie night, etc., so it's not just about getting together at the office anymore.
