Wren is a gender neutral name. Ren is not really a name in English. I'd got with Wren.
Wren is not really gender neutral at this point. It's a female name. Go with Ren, since it's a nickname.
If you look at the Wikipedia list of notable Wrens, it's about 50/50. More girls are given the legal name Wren, but that's because people are generally more conservative with boys names. Looking at notable people with the nickname Wren gives you a better sense of how the nickname is used.
Name perception changes over time though. Laurie used to be a common nickname for boys named Lawrence. Ashley and Lindsay used to be boy names. The historical list of people with the name Wren will not reflect contemporary attitudes on the name. I don't even agree with the PPs on here that Wren is definitively feminine at this point. There was a male character on the show Pretty Little Liars named Wren, which wasn't that long ago. But I do think it's skewing feminine more recently.
