Group gifts for teachers and coaches are my pet peeve. Stop
Not thanking a volunteer coach for your kid is appallingly rude.
You can thank a volunteer coach by saying thank you, or writing a thank you card. If a volunteer coach is in it for the gift rather than the love of the game, then they shouldn't be volunteering.
Or maybe you could volunteer next time. Or find something else for your kid. When you volunteer for kids’ stuff parents who drop their kids off have no idea of the time, planning and unexpected money suck it becomes. Once, someone calculating whether we’d spent over $100 dollars that year was clearly calculating whether their contribution to a token gift was merited. We’d actually spent several thousand in addition to the volunteer time. Because we wanted to. And we never told the kids. But it was nice to get two bottles of (ordinary) wine and a thank you note.
