I babysat all the time through college and I've never heard of tipping a babysitter, just a flat rate. If something happened when I was on duty sometimes parents would be generous and give a little extra but not always (child awake crying or threw up, etc).
+1
+2
-1 I was always tipped when I babysat in high school and college. We tip our sitter now, usually rounding up. We also leave money for dinner and pay her for at least an hour of her time if we have to cancel at the last minute. She's great with our kids, highly trustworthy, and we want her to keep coming back. We negotiated a slightly lower rate with her, and don't get out that much (once a month about), but it's worth it for high quality child care.
