I was always tipped when I babysat in high school and college. We tip our sitter now, usually rounding up.

We also leave money for dinner and pay her for at least an hour of her time if we have to cancel at the last minute. She's great with our kids, highly trustworthy, and we want her to keep coming back. We negotiated a slightly lower rate with her, and don't get out that much (once a month about), but it's worth it for high quality child care.

Rounding up and tipping are not the same thing, so no, you are not tipping your sitter.

I round up to the next half hour. In general they arrive around 7:00 when the baby is already in bed, and play for an hour with our extremely cooperative 5-year old before she goes to bed. Then they sit and study/read/watch TV for 3 hours. So no, they don't get any more then their set rate unless I ask them to do something out of the ordinary.

just posted but thinking further on this - it makes ZERO sense to tip a sitter who sets her own rates. If she wants paid more, she should charge a higher rate. Why would there be an expectation of tipping on top of the rate the sitter quoted? Tipping in other jobs is to people who do not set their own wages.

I don't tip. I pay $20/hr and will round up, but that is it. What % do people tip?

Every family is different. It's not standard to tip a babysitter but some families do. I've been working with children for 14 years and I'd say the majority do not tip. If you are paying $15-20 an hour for your babysitter, tipping is not necessary. If you are paying $8-10, sure give her a little extra if you feel the desire.
