Nowadays my dentist uses a digital camera that creates a 3 d digital shape, I don't know how long they can re-use it, but I know it's less than 2 years based on personal experience (and I've had the same dentist for 20 years, he's awesome, and I know he wouldn't cause me to incur unnecessary costs).
