I had no idea there was a transvaginal ultrasound-like wand that could even do that! My dentist still uses the metal pans with the sticky stuff that hardens to make an impression of my teeth, then apparently sends it out to a company that makes the mouth guard.

Maybe the universe is telling you that you need a better-fitting mouth guard. Hope you have the means to replace it. Think of it as an investment in your future health.

Also, NEVER USE the ones from CVS!!!!!!!! Those effed up my bite so badly that I had to get Invisalign to correct it. Wish I’d just coughed up for the ones from my dentist in the first place. I’m serious!!!!!

OP, I don’t know brand names, but my dentists office has nightguards from 3 different companies - the one that is officially a night guard and meant to be long last is thick and stiff and awful and doesn’t feel right at all for me. There’s a thinner type that he recommended, but I was biting through them pretty regularly. The ones from Invisalign itself work the best. Ask your dentist if there are other brands to try!

Mouths change. I just posted about losing my partial. Nowadays my dentist uses a digital camera that creates a 3 d digital shape, I don't know how long they can re-use it, but I know it's less than 2 years based on personal experience (and I've had the same dentist for 20 years, he's awesome, and I know he wouldn't cause me to incur unnecessary costs).

OP, I wear a partial. But I also have a problem with objects touching my body and I often take it out (I also can't bring myself to wear jewelry or watches or most synthetic clothing). The first time I lost it I searched the room where it should have been in thoroughly, and held off making an appt for a few weeks. Sure enough, the very day after they made the mold for a replacement and I was basically in for the expense, the old one magically appeared between 2 couch cushions.

The next one got chewed up by the dog, best guess it got knocked off the bathroom counter.

I lost another, I forget how. After that I became much more careful and kept the same device for several years. Three weeks ago, it started bothering me in the car. I took it out but was driving and set it on the dashboard instead of putting it in the pocket in my bag I use in such cases. Then I forgot to grab it going into the house and now I can't find it. And I'm embarrassed to go back to my dentist.

I had that tool in my mouth but Invisalign keeps a record and so, probably, does my orthodontist.

It is weird in this day of tracking everything about us that no one would keep a record of your mouthguard design/shape in a computer system.

I will ask whether I have to be rewanded, that’s a good idea. But I am going to see if he can refer me to someone who still has the old school setup. As far as the plumbing, I’m just going to pretend I never read that comment. Actually, I have ACs who were teen boys in this house and it survived them, so the mouth guard probably won’t defeat it.

You are a fantastic writer. Maybe you could make some money as a humor writer to pay for future mouthguards! Or maybe as a basketball player due to your impressive aim?

Is it possible that your dentist still has the records from the prior wanding, and you can save yourself some money and dignity?

If they used the wand, then the prior mouthguard sizing is saved in their computers. So, you wouldn't need to go through the wand.

50 something who really hates her invisalign but has had practice remake a few that I lost.

I only have experience with the transvaginal wand! Not fun but necessary. I was jealous of all the ones who just had the ones on your belly like you see on TV all the time.

But I do need a mouthguard and I don't want to go through all that. I think I'll try the sport one first and see if it works for me.

I am a clencher who has used mouth guards since 2007. Mine cost more than $700 consider yourself lucky.
During covid my periodontist gave instructions on what to do if it broke, involving a boil and mold hard guard.
However he told me early on that for CLENCHERS the soft ones make things worse.
I do encourage you to get a new professionally made guard and iterate until it's right. Your jaw bones and teeth will thank you later on.
Also sorry to say you may need to buy a new toilet. DH once flushed the toilet roll holder rod and it clogged in the toilet structure. Be on guard.

I’m right there with you, same experience with the wand and the super thick one because I grind. I switched dentists and they put it through insurance and it was so much cheaper. I think this once cost me less than $300. But yeah, I could relate to everything you wrote!

They also said I could go to a specialist for Botox injections for tmj but I haven’t done that, to minimize grinding. It’s a lot of money too.

Those don't work for me or the others like me that have posted in this thread. We will bite right through them. We need custom fitted guards made out of a different material- the super soft material in the OTC types actually makes us bite harder. The custom guards also retrain muscles so that after wearing them for awhile, you can miss a night here and there and you won't clench.
