It has gotten much harder. We put our kids in private schools that emphasize kindness and have classes on morals and ethics. And of course you are the main model - so be kind!
We did this, and honestly what my kids learned from it is that the adults were hypocrites. Among other things they swept the presence of a sex predator in the community under the rug to avoid the bad PR. Very much like the Catholic Church scandal. Just make sure you’re asking yourself all the time: when push comes to shove, are the adults in the community *actually* putting the children first? Or have they convinced themselves that protecting their reputation is a necessary first step to some theoretical, down-the-road-someday protection of children? When faced with actually hard choices, are they actually making morals-first choices? Or are those lessons on kindness and ethics more of a cudgel to keep kids behaving? Don’t stop asking. Good luck.
