Found something interesting from 2002 when the Board of Supervisors was planning for Cub Run. https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/sites/parks/files/Assets/documents/plandev/master-plans/cub-run-rec-center.pdf
This looks to have the answer. An area of approximately 13.7 acres in the northwest portion of the site, west of Cub Run, has been identified for a future elementary school. FCPS has owned the property for decades. If they ever need the space for another ES somewhere near Westfield HS, they own the property. (In addition, it looks like Cub Run Rec and the park are on long-term leases from FCPS.)
It kind of makes sense with some of the new townhomes coming up, but with the enrollment decline, it seems unnecessary to own land that may not serve the purpose FCPS may want it to.
True, but, Fairfax is running out of buildable land and the County is still projecting significant population increases over the next 25 years.
Fair point. And who knows, there could be another baby boom depending on future conditions.
Well birth rates are rising now.
that can't be true.
Its not.
It is true. Birth rates are up from the covid years, but they are not yet back to pre-covid levels. So yes, they are by definition rising.
