This is a story of demographic change. In 2000, about 60% of public school students were white and 16% were Hispanic. Today, 44% are white and 29% are Hispanic. When you significantly increase the numbers of students who speak a different language at home and — in this country — are more likely to be in poverty, average scores go down.
So just parroting MAGA talking points and blaming immigrants.
DP here. I work in a school with a high immigrant population. It was and is shocking to me how differently the parents of these students view education, almost like it’s optional or there for their convenience. They are much less likely to attend Back to School Night or other school events and their children have much higher rates of absenteeism.
Why do immigrant parents view their children’s education as optional or there merely for convenience? Also: why do they fail to attend Back to School Night, and accept their child’s chronic absenteeism? I believe the group “immigrants” has to be further broken down here: My child attends TJ and a high percentage of the TJ parents are immigrants; further, the student body is 81% BIPOCS and just 19% whites. Overwhelmingly, the immigrant parents are Asian/Indian/Pakistani. These are not the immigrants who PP has in her classroom. Immigrant parents from Central America (CA) come primarily from 3 countries where, for the vast majority of citizens: public education ends at 6th grade or before. While even universities exist in CA for the wealthy and privileged, it’s true that education ends at 6th grade for most. Immigrant parents from that educational background don’t value the American public education system because they have no experience with it, nor are they generally able to see the point of it.
