DP here. I work in a school with a high immigrant population. It was and is shocking to me how differently the parents of these students view education, almost like it’s optional or there for their convenience. They are much less likely to attend Back to School Night or other school events and their children have much higher rates of absenteeism.

Why do immigrant parents view their children’s education as optional or there merely for convenience? Also: why do they fail to attend Back to School Night, and accept their child’s chronic absenteeism?

I believe the group “immigrants” has to be further broken down here:

My child attends TJ and a high percentage of the TJ parents are immigrants; further, the student body is 81% BIPOCS and just 19% whites.

Overwhelmingly, the immigrant parents are Asian/Indian/Pakistani. These are not the immigrants who PP has in her classroom.

Immigrant parents from Central America (CA) come primarily from 3 countries where, for the vast majority of citizens: public education ends at 6th grade or before. While even universities exist in CA for the wealthy and privileged, it’s true that education ends at 6th grade for most.

Immigrant parents from that educational background don’t value the American public education system because they have no experience with it, nor are they generally able to see the point of it.

You responded to an immigrant, and no one I know views education that way. I most certainly do not.

I imagine it varies by culture/country of origin.

If your kid can't repair a rip in their clothing, it's your fault, not the school's fault. Teach your own kid a thing or two.
Mine aces calculus AND can fix a rip in their clothes. It's not an either/or situation.

You should want your kid to learn as much as they can...not just the bare minimum.
You should also teach them how to cook and about personal finance.

And they should know math and writing and grammar and science.

Kids who lean in to their education with parental support are not dumber...my kid is smarter than I was at their age.

DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH

And “basic” is even lower than being “proficient”

Only 20-30% of 12th graders are proficient according to NEAP

Agree. Unfortunately most corporate/government jobs do require some type of Bachelor degree.

And not only that, but without learning continually, our brains atrophy. I imagine we will be seeing a lot more 30 year olds with dementia in not so not-so-distant future.

The top ten percent or so of students are doing just fine. Very bright. Very accomplished.

But the bottom 50 percent of high school students are just dumbasses. I really don't know how they're going to make a living. It's not like there's a factory or mine next door that will take their physical labor. A very lost group - and there's a lot of them.

And here is the prime example of why math and reading scores are down. When parents don't value education, what can we expect from their kids?
