Both because the few posters from outside the area never identify themselves as this unless pressed, and often, not even then. What’s the point of a NY forum, which they presumably lobbied for, if they aren’t even going to use it for questions about experiences from NY high schools?
We have been running DCUM for about 20 years. When the site was probably 4 years old, someone told me that a forum is like a child and that you could try to nurture it to be the way you wanted it to be, but eventually it would have its own personality and would be impossible to control. In the case of the college forum, this advice has proven true. I have never paid much attention to that particular forum and it has evolved organically. It has been a national forum for many years. Probably more than it was ever truly local. I don't know why that is, but that's that how it developed. I could try to implement a rule requiring posters provide their location, but it would be ignored. The Real Estate forum has a rule requiring topics to indicate the state of the particular property. It is ignored 99% of the time. I don't have the cycles to sit around monitoring that sort of thing. This is all to say that I don't think I can really do anything about the situation you describe. Nor do I particularly want to as it seems like it would be a lot of wasted effort. BTW, New York has a lot of people in it. I doubt that the individuals who requested that we create a New York local forum are the same ones posting in the college forum.
