University generally teaches you to read literature, whereas the language institutes have an emphasis on teaching you to communicate using the language. You're also going to get a native speaker instructor in a language institute, which you're unlikely to get in an American high school. Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that your high school will give you credit for the language institute, but you can at least sit for the Zertifikat Deutsch (or the official test in whatever language you're interested in) and get a credential that proves you can actually speak the language. I'd also bet that one year of instruction at a language school is better than four years of high school German. [/quote]
