For the high school poster: Bishop Ireton in Alexandria offers German and the teacher is very well liked.

Warum? Honestly, I took 6 years of German and it was totally pointless, as essentially every German person speaks better English than I speak German.

Seton School in Manassas offers German in Junior and Senior high. Good luck finding something in MD close to DC. Baltimore County privates more likely to offer German.

If memory serves, from their website, it is an allowed language that one can pursue independently and at cost on one's own in HS using approved tutors or plans that would qualify for the IB diploma. Check with them directly but that was my sense of it.

Has anyone had success having their HS or MS allow it in lieu of standard language requirements?

i can't find any German language offerings in WIS website. Is it an elective? They only offer French, Spanish, and Chinese.

Would love to see if our school would let DD do it high school. Goethe Institute's StudyBridge looks incredible.

I'm the PP who bumped this thread today. My kids are doing online classes through Goethe and they have been good so far.

I think very highly of foreign language institutes, and believe they're much better than anything you'll get in a high school or university. University generally teaches you to read literature, whereas the language institutes have an emphasis on teaching you to communicate using the language. You're also going to get a native speaker instructor in a language institute, which you're unlikely to get in an American high school. Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that your high school will give you credit for the language institute, but you can at least sit for the Zertifikat Deutsch (or the official test in whatever language you're interested in) and get a credential that proves you can actually speak the language. I'd also bet that one year of instruction at a language school is better than four years of high school German.
