It's the "Look at Crazy Rich People" activity people have loved to do ever since some humans had more than others. It's popular because it makes people bond over a common "enemy". Laughing at them and ridiculing their choices is better than taking up pitchforks and sharpening the guillotine blade. No normal people (and very few wealthy people) decorate to that extent, obviously. It takes a decorator/crazy parent and movers to do all that.
Yup! We have the money, neither of mine wanted that (and one is female). Dorm rooms are small, you only have 9 months in it. Simpler is better. They'd rather spend on quality. One kid has a Tempurpedic Twin Xl 3-4" mattress topper. Was less than $150, every single friend loves it and wants to sit on their bed when in that room. My kid will get 4 years of use out of it. So worth every penny (we put it into storage each summer, nicely wrapped in large trash bags to protect it). So there, I'd rather spend $150 than $30 and get one that makes the bed really comfy. But sheets and towels, my kid just wants decent ones and tosses them every 1-2 years anyhow (towels at least)
