Even pre-puberty, there's a slight physical differential, and that differential favors boys. And afterwards... the 200 meter record for 17-18 year old girls is 23.24 seconds, just a bit faster than the 23.37 second record for 11-12 year old boys.

My understanding is that, in fact, it happens regularly, and the US and other international teams use boys to practice against - it is just that these matches aren't supposed to be publicized.

Soccer is probably close to the worst case, as far as female sports disadvantages. It is not that hard to find college women losing in friendly soccer matches / kick offs  to their school's male football or basketball teams.[/quote]
