For many of these people, coming out of this will break them. They need to gradually see the light, and find relatively tolerant friends and family on the other side. It's like coming out of an addiction. You're never fully healed, and can fall for another conspiracy theory at any time. You feel shame and guilt if you ever realize how far gone you were before.

It's SO MUCH easier to continue believing lies, no matter how many pretzels you need to twist yourself into, because it's the only way of preserving your self-esteem. I am convinced a lot of them will go to their graves, decades from now, still half-believing this stuff. "No smoke without fire! There had to be something there, we were just never told for some reason." That's the sort of stuff they'll say.
