My 5th grade AAP child dropped in reading. I wonder if the 5th graders spent all those weeks exploring the world of corn, and then turns out, the test had nary a mention of corn? What if it tested them on something like celery? They totally would not have been prepared! No wonder my child dropped in reading!
Maybe Benchmark is good for helping kids who are not so good at reading, but not great at helping kids who are already strong in reading to keep growing toward their potential? Or maybe teacher differences? My kid's 4th grade language arts teacher really pushed them and his score jumped way up from 3rd grade. I don't think this year's teacher has been nearly as challenging. In 4th he would bring home a lot of LA homework and this year, none.
