I regularly practice fasting. OMAD is my regular pattern of eating. I have previously done longer water fasts for 48, 36, up to 72 hours. Those are something you should only undertake after studying this practice for some time and understand how to prepare your body so that you don’t hurt yourself. To do longer fast, you have to be what’s called fat adapted ahead of time so you don’t crater your blood sugar, and end up in the hospital. Electrolytes and at least 100oz water per day are very important and you have to watch for signs that your gallbladder is not happy. Fasting helps to reset the body. When it is practiced safely, it is very beneficial. Fasting stimulates the GLP1 in your body, and shuts down your hunger hormones. You will particularly feel mental clarity after about the 18th hour on a water fast. You will literally feel unstoppable. If you’re doing a 36 hour fast make sure that you are occasionally having warm cups of salted water to replenish electrolytes. Finally, when you first break your fast, I would encourage you to go very slow and start with just a cup of broth. Re Feeding should be done with very light and easy to digest foods like bone broth, a small salad, a light fish, or something else with a low glycemic index. You may notice that you get diarrhea. This is normal after a period of gut rest. I find after I do a period of fasting my body feels lighter, my head is clearer, and I don’t crave snacks or sugar. This is a wonderful way to also transition onto a lower carbohydrate diet.
