"Starving yourself"?
The obesity rate in the USA is unfathomable. Nobody here starves.

People who don’t eat for 36 hours…are starving themselves

Don't buy into the "you must consooom 3 meals a day" propaganda. That just releases more insulin and helps you gain weight more easily.

Being in ketosis is not "starving" oneself. To be "starving" you must be malnourished, which requires repeatedly making poor eating habit and dietary intake decisions.

Agree. The point of fasting is getting into ketosis--insulin levels drop and the body starts using its own stored fat for fuel. There was someone from Scotland who fasted for 386 days -- didn't eat, just drank water and took vitamins -- and lost hundreds of pounds. Anybody can do a ketogenic diet and fasting and get better results than taking Ozempic, and it's free.

You will feel famished, fatigued, and feverish when first going low carb. Takes about a week to adjust, two weeks for some. After that your "hunger cravings" which are mostly mental, will subside.

Speaking from experience, I would not recommend trying to do IF and 'very' low carb. It is not sustainable. If you do want to do that, I'd recommend having a cheat meal or refeed day once per week. Letting your carb stores get too low is a recipe for binge eating.

There's nothing wrong with having carbs in moderation as long as you are prioritizing your protein intake for the bulk of your calories. Its more important to be in a slight calorie deficit while doing strength building exercise to maintain muscle as you lose fat.

Eating before bed is good for gaining weight and muscle. Not so much for thinning down though.

PP here. I forgot to mention that as a busy mom with a big family doing the OMAD style of eating helps me be super efficient with all of the things that I have to do for work and at home.

The mental clarity aspect is incredible and I have a lot of of energy during the day.

The OMAD pattern of eating is a type of intermittent fasting, which opened your eating over 2 to 4 hours.

I regularly practice fasting. OMAD is my regular pattern of eating. I have previously done longer water fasts for 48, 36, up to 72 hours. Those are something you should only undertake after studying this practice for some time and understand how to prepare your body so that you don’t hurt yourself.

To do longer fast, you have to be what’s called fat adapted ahead of time so you don’t crater your blood sugar, and end up in the hospital.

Electrolytes and at least 100oz water per day are very important and you have to watch for signs that your gallbladder is not happy.

Fasting helps to reset the body. When it is practiced safely, it is very beneficial.

Fasting stimulates the GLP1 in your body, and shuts down your hunger hormones. You will particularly feel mental clarity after about the 18th hour on a water fast. You will literally feel unstoppable. If you’re doing a 36 hour fast make sure that you are occasionally having warm cups of salted water to replenish electrolytes.

Finally, when you first break your fast, I would encourage you to go very slow and start with just a cup of broth. Re Feeding should be done with very light and easy to digest foods like bone broth, a small salad, a light fish, or something else with a low glycemic index. You may notice that you get diarrhea. This is normal after a period of gut rest.

I find after I do a period of fasting my body feels lighter, my head is clearer, and I don’t crave snacks or sugar.

This is a wonderful way to also transition onto a lower carbohydrate diet.

Anyone BTDT? I could use all the words of encouragement!

Congratulations! It is a very healthy thing to do. Fasting stimulates GLP1 naturally. The key is getting fat adapted first on a healthy low carbohydrate diet for several weeks, so your body is “trained” to turn to fat for fuel.

Ignore the uninformed comments here. The science is very clear on the positive health benefits of fasting.

I’m currently on an OMAD regimen and will start rolling 36’s next week.

Depending on how old are you and how active, it is good for you. I've done it. 36 hours means you're just fasting one full day and wait to break the fast till next morning. To lose weight you'd need to repeat that though. Maybe once a week. We often eat when we aren't hungry, when it is just a clock saying it's time. This will put you in touch with what hunger really feels like. It doesn't feel bad at all. Stay away from the kitchen, stay busy. Listen to a book or a podcast to keep your mind occupied and interrupt that internal dialogue trying to convince you that you cannot do this. Exercise first thing in the morning. I found it didn't make me hungrier, and a good way to keep busy.
