What diverse opinions! We have a long list- the plaka neighborhoods, rooftop dinner at Kuzina overlooking acropolis, the stadium, changing of the guards, botanical gardens, island day tour, etc Maybe americans coming to Greece from the Us feel a huge need to make it like disneyland (all of those who only mentioned going to the acropolis for example) we do slow Tourism trying to maximize the experience not tick things of the list.
Huh? Those of us who have been to Athens are probably in a better position than you are when you have never been. I did all of the things you list and some day trips outside the city as well. We also spent a week on Crete. The fact is that Athens, outside of the acropolis and the acropolis museum, isn’t a great tourist city. It isn’t like London or Paris or Rome or Barcelona where there are nearly unlimited great tourist sites. You have to fly in and out of Athens, but otherwise your time in Greece is better spent elsewhere. Athens is probably the exact opposite of a “slow travel city”. It just isn’t a great walking / strolling type place. There is very little greenery at all, there are cars everywhere and walking around is difficult. It is also quite dirty with a lot of graffiti and sketchy type places. The food is good, but you can get better food on the islands.
