How does he feel about it, OP? Our kid expressed a strong preference to stay at home MS to be with friends and avoid a very long bus ride. We let her decide.
We've talked to him about it and he's interested but nervous about the potential change. We won't force him to do it and are laying out the pluses and minuses (thanks to those who have commented!) so we can consider it as a family. He's worried about leaving friends but likes the curriculum of the magnet a lot.
Honestly, as a parent, the bold troubles me, particularly at middle school age. Yes, it’s normal to feel nervous about potential change. But life is full of potential change, and the answer isn’t avoiding change. I’d prefer to encourage my kid by acknowledging the fear of change but also considering what can be good about the change, how it feels to go thru change, what tools we have to manage change and that it’s OK to try something and have it not work out (I.e. try the school and go back to home school I’d something is not working &can’t be addressed). There’s a sweet spot between forcing a child to go and reinforcing fear and avoidance. Old friends are important, but the ability to make new friends in a new environment is an important skill to practice.
