I think it will slow them, but not entirely stop them.

Trump can read the room. Firing veterans, having to hire people back who do things like transport nuclear material or work on power lines, etc. isn't playing super well. Neither is Elon Musk, for that matter.

I think they approach they are going to take now will be to ferret anyone with performance issues, or anyone who has been formally reprimanded, anyone under investigation for wrongdoing, etc. I heard second hand that one of the IC agencies is enforcing their drug testing policy. It's always been on the books, but is suddenly being enforced. Then it will be formal RIFs or people heavily encourage to retire or resign with VERA/VSIP.[/quote]

I imagine Trump is embarrassed that this isn't being done in such a way that people go away. Sure at first it was we fired a zillion probationary people. Then nuclear material people called back, NIH, FDA, and NSF have all called people back, USDA had to take back 4900 probationaries for now. That plus the plan to get rid of like 80,000 vets probably isn't planning that well. But then Elon owns him so he can't exactly scream at him like others. So he end runs it by telling agency heads to do terminations - hoping they'll be done the right way (or closer to the right way). For fed workers probably good if these firings stop/slow down and it's actual reorgs or RIFs with severance. [/quote]

No one should have any illusions that this means that terminations will be fair or reasoned in any way. They will still be coming right from Musk, and most agencies will jump to fire whatever random percentage he comes up with.
