Maybe the most shocking part of the documentary to me was the detailed interaction with the cops where they were thinking about charging her with battery when the witness clearly saw him battering her.
That was upsetting to me as well. I had seen a lot of the clips but watching the whole body cam from multiple officers was really eye-opening. Wasn't there one officer that seemed to have a better read, saying that statistically Gabby was in danger and unlikely to want to leave her abuser (thus explaining why she downplayed his assault)? And so what if he has scratches? She has marks too and a witness reported the assault, why wouldn't she be allowed to defend herself? My biggest takeaway from the doc was how horrible Brian's parents were. I knew they were not cooperative, but it's hard to say how one would respond in the face of crisis. And with all the press and harassment from the public, maybe it isn't so far-fetched that you would lawyer up and refuse to talk. But omg those people were a-holes from the start! The way the officers were trying to talk them down, stay casual, and just get some crumb of information about a missing person whose life could be at stake, and the parents just kept refusing. I was glad to see the police take the van even though Brian's dad was like "oh, I think it's both of theirs." No, buddy, the cop can find out. Also what's up with the Florida investigators putting off the New York police? "What do you want us to do? We wouldn't even file a report if we were in your place." ??? wtf??
